Check out www.VRBO.com We've used that website a few times and had great luck.

Define not too spendy. How many people will you need to accommodate?
I took Brian M's advice from the forum a while back and have loved this place he recommended. You can have up to five people and can't beat the view.

Ha! You beat me to it, as I was just about to make the same recommendation. Glad you enjoyed that place!

if you decide a hotel is the option for you. i would recommend Lands End on the spit only. Working at the police dept i learn more than i want to.

there are a ton of cabins and such in homer and for the hunter, id expect you would be happier there than hotel

Thats me. We have reservations for three with you but the third is getting cold feet. I think he will come around though.

This is is my first trip to homer. Do we need a rental car? Or can we just walk or taxi everywhere?

Can't wait to get up there!

If you stay at lands end you can pretty much walk anywhere you need to on the spit. Lands end is not the cheapest, and the restaurant is a restaurant by virtue of the view, not the cuisine.
There are some decent places to stay above the little mermaid restaurant (best on the spit) the sport shed, and the sea lion gallery.

oh i forgot about all the cabins over the fishing charters. great views and centrally located too.

i'd just grab a taxi if you need to go into town. there is a rental place in town if need be tho. Finn's pizza is a must while your here

I really enjoy camping on the spit. It's bare bones, but everything is available. Meet lots of fun people, be right at the fishing hole, and docks. Walk to the hotel, or the Salty Dog. If it's nasty then I get a room in town.

I don't know.....me and the little woman had steaks there last week....with the sunset and some Homer Brew, it was pretty bomb. Here's where I used to stay on shopping trips to town: http://www.dandycabins.com/

Here's a nightly rental I did some work on recently....built the four-poster beds, and did a little remodeling....it definitely ain't cheap but it sure is nice : http://www.vrbo.com/485919

We used to stay in the Windjammer suites. Nice little place on pioneer, so it's walking distance from a bunch of little cafés, restaurants, books store, liquor store, etc. great price. Not the prettiest but very livable. Highly recommend.

I stayed at the best western a couple weeks ago with my family and two dog. No complaints at all, good bar/restaurant, Wifi, great free breakfast. One downfall could be that it is not within walking distance of the spit.
