    Default Stock refinishing question

I just got done refinishing an old ADL stock on my Remington 700. It turned out ok. I learned a lot as this was my first complete stock refinish. I know where the imperfections are.

I am ready to go at it again while I have all of the materials out and handy. I have a laminated(again Remington) stock, I think off of a Mt. Rifle, though not for sure. Anyways it has the black grip cap and black at the forend. much like a BDL walnut stock.

So, my question is this: Is the black of the grip cap and forend just painted on wood? If I sand it down what will I find under there? I want to know so I now how to go about this and not make a big mistake from the get go.

    Thanks for any help.

Well I got my own question answered. I scraped off some of the black in the barrel channel. It is a black hard plastic of some sort.

Yup plastic epoxied on most likley. It's to mimic the high end ebony wood caps.
