Thread: Why "BLACK" for color of most Modern Military Rifles........???

Default Why "BLACK" for color of most Modern Military Rifles........???

Why BLACK.......??? Is it because it "LOOKS" evil, or is there a good reason.....??? I would think a flat medium brown, or a flat medium green would be much more versatile than solid black. Or the ability to have flat green lower mated to a flat brown upper.

    So why Black.....???

Which is why I will end up with NO all black AR-15's. I have a few and have been painting them. I should think if a civilian ever had to go on trial (Even for a NON-firearms related event) it would play better in the media if LEO did not find Black Firearms.

Sadly Leupold does not offer colored rifle scopes in any flat color but black, I sure think they are missing a large market opportunity.

I like color. The problem is most think that color means "tacti-cool". Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't. Go with what makes you happy. I saw I gentleman with a purple ar. The whole ranged giggled till he shot....now folks want purple. ..amazing...

Not to be a pain but have you actually seen what most people do to them? The most popular fad now is flat dark earth nearly over the entire rifle. The only thing that isn't would be the barrel and the receivers. And even then a LOT of people paint them or have them anodized in a color other than black.

For barrels, it really depends on the process used to treat them. I prefer the Nitro-Carberizing treatment which leaves a dark matte black.

For the rest, look into Cerakote and do a search on rifles. Pretty much any color you can think of. Head over to AR15.com and browse the picture threads. You'll be surprised and how few solid black rifles are on there. Noveske, Daniel Defense, and LWRC are all offering FDE rifles that are solid color. Like I said, you might be surprised to see that many of them are not solid black anymore.

In my opinion Black stands out more pronounced than any other color. Even at my age I can look up on my mountains and pick out black bears with no optics easily. Otherwise I see an animal and have to get the optic assistance to tell if it is Grizzly or Caribou.

It's for the same reason that everyone in the Military dresses the same.

It's so they can tell them apart.

I would guess because it's easy to standardize on. That said, note that many of the military M4 (and variants) don't stay black long either.

    Here are a couple examples:

    Attachment 76943
    Attachment 76944
I can only post 2 images, but the point is, once they get them a lot of guys "alter" them to fit the place they are going. If the .mil standardized on say OD, how would that work in the desert. If FDE, what about the jungle? Etc. Settling on black is a simple basic easy decision. They are allowed to modify to fit the job.

I truly never thought about that, that works as a good answer for me. Thank You. I really can't grasp that I did NOT consider that.
