Default Rock River "tactical" sight question

So I bought this AR about 7 years ago and have never shot it or really looked at it much but I was putting a scope on it last night because I'm wanting to start shooting it my question is what is this plug and hole for? it has an o-ring on the plug part and there is nothing but a hole, the plug also has a spring in it like the battery part of a flashlight... Any ideas?

It's a spare battery compartment for the 1/3 N size battery that powers the Aimpoint sight this thing was designed for. Back in the day this Aimpoint sight only came with a low mount. To get it up to co-witness heights an aftermarket riser was needed. This RRA Tactical Mount was designed to fill that need.
