Default Caribou out of Happy Valley vs. Kotzebue

Does anyone have an opinion or stance on the caribou hunting flying out of Happy Valley vs. flying out of Kotzebue. I know that it is two seperate herds, one bigger than the other, but is there a drastic difference in quality, etc?

    Thanks

the advantage is you have road access to Happy. you are flying everything in and out of kotzebue. the amount of caribou is the same either place when you consider you are just shooting a few of them.

The disadvantage to Happy Valley, if coming from Outside, is finding somebody to rent you a truck that they approve to be used on The Haul Road. Standard rental companies will not allow their vehicles on most of the unimproved/gravel highways of AK. The advantage to Happy Valley (assuming you find a rental vehicle) is that the drive up from either Anchorage or Fairbanks will allow you to see a whole lot of the state from 60mph and ground level vs. 30,000 feet and mach.82 on your way up to Kotzebue.

Of course, if you hunt out of Kotz once you are packed up and checked in after returning from your bush flight the hard work is over vs. driving back down the Haul Road and then having to repack for the flight back home. Easy decision! Pick one location this year and the other for the following year. The Arctic has a way of drawing you back.

Inre Happy Valley, I know 70 North (if you fly with them) can shuttle folks down from Deadhorse if you can't drive in. Harvest limits are greater for the Central Arctic Herd too out of HV, as far as I know.

There are a couple of places that rent Pickups that are allowed on the Haul Road, In Fairbanks.

We had a couple of guys that brought Caribou to us last year that rented a 4 door & it had a cab over Camper on it. Wasn't cheap but they split the cost 4 ways & it worked for them.

Also , Every Year we see Uhaul Vans up there. They rent them in Fairbanks & live in them instead of a tent. Beats the crap out of a soggy windblown tent, plus you can camp where you end up.

If you drive up from Fairbanks it also gives you opportunity to take all of your gear , Caribou Meat, skins, & antlers with you back to town & get them processed.

There is not that much you can do with any of it in Deadhorse or Kotz ( Havent been through Kotz but have gotten several Caribou to mount from there).

Fairbanks has cheaper motels to chose from, Meat Proccessors ( Santas Smokeshop), Several Rental places, Great choice of restaurants, Taxidermists, ect.
