Thread: Anything to catch during winter?

Default Anything to catch during winter?

Have always wondered if there is any good saltwater fishing during the winter months. Either from a boat or a beach. Do all the shallow water species such as rockfish and flounder stay active during winter?

Rockfish are still there, as are cod. Trolling for feeder/winter kings can be great as well, depending on where you're at.

    +1.

Not sure exactly where they are right now...any intel MGH55 close enough for the kayak? Looking to maybe try Thur or Fri.

Managed a dozen kings on 6 trips (had a proxy, skunked twice) from late sept to first week in December out of Homer...off a kayak!

I've caught small rockfish off my kayak in March out of Whittier getting my kayak dialed in for shrimp opener in April.

All your rockfish species are fun this time of year, at least down here in Kodiak. Homer is great for numbers of winter kings, kodiak for big winter kings.

How late is late to still go after kings in Homer? I understand weather ditates but can you still find kings around Homer deep into Dec.

What about shore fishing out of homer or kenai area? Been wanting to do it just not familiar enough with the areas. Hate to travel all way out for no reason.

We went in March and shore fished at Land's End caught cod, flounder, Pollock, and lords(which are tossed immediately). Oh yeah! My first shore halibut also!! I didn't keep that little guy
