Thread: Curly haired fox?

    Default Curly haired fox?

I was fortunate enough to pick up a couple foxes over the holidays, and I'm amazed with the difference. The cross fox (partially shown in the foreground) has an awesome pelt; long, thick guard hair and great coloration. The red, in the background, appears to have curly hair. Its fur is short, thick, and wavy -- almost looks like wool -- with virtually no guard hairs. Anyone else experience this? Do these "curly haired" ones sell for significantly less?

It appears to possibly be what is known as a Sampsons fox it is a genetic thing where they never grow guard hairs. It is hard to tell from your picture but generally Sampsons tails are very thin in Diameter and not big and puffy like a nice prime winter red would be. I use to get a few every year in a particular area but haven't seen one in probably 10 yrs now so am hoping I got the ones with bad Genes cleaned out of the gene pool

I say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That red is gorgeous! I've got one similar to that hanging in my office at work and it draws more attention than any other critter in my office. I don't know how the pelts differ but rarity is cool in my eyes. Keep it if it draws less money... Hang it up and remember it

Ak Predator has a point most of the sampsons I have caught were some of the darkest red fox I have seen, but a few were just flat ugly too IMO. they are also sought after on the taxi market by some so that maybe a way to sell if you desire
