Are you hunting them over bait, or just in general? I haven't done much baiting, but my friends who do have much better luck late at night. As for spot-and-stalk black bear hunting, I've seen them at all hours of the day. Summer is so short that they're usually feeding as often as possible, regardless of what the clock says.

I think at my age that would be considered stalking.

a few weeks ago we hiked 7 miles into an area and saw 5 black bears from one spot. they all came out about 9:30 to 9:45 pm. Then all all appeared the next morning about 8am and were gone into the brush by 8:30. One did come out about 11 am but he was in and out of the brush.

I have both black and brown bears hitting my bait station during the morning and all the way up to around 4 p.m. It's weird because they ain't coming in during the evening when I'm sitting my stand, except for one small black bear I seen the other day.
