I like any of the round style ones. They help keep the hole from refreezing and the little tackle box on top that some have is nice to keep extra hooks and weights in.

I like the POLARTHERM from HT. They are bombproof, freezeproof and have been around forever.
I use heavy braided Dacron on mine with a duoloc snap on the end.
I make my own quickstrikes with #6 OR #8 trebles and a swivel on the end for even the biggest pike.
When I get a fish I quickly unclip the quickstrike and attach a prebaited setup and back in the water it goes. Then I can take my time removing the fish from my other quickstrike.I recommend a jaw spreader for this.
I like to check my sets at least once each hour and quite often hook up with fish shortly after raising the tipup to clean the hole.
I think the movement of the bait draws them in or convinces them to commit.
If I wanted to keep the holes from freezing I would make/buy some foam hole covers.

I use Beaver Dam tip ups. They work for any fish large and small.

Beaver dams are great, fished with a few guys who used them for years, fine product.

I use heritage lakers. I used to work in a truck tractor shop, cut out 12" square hole covers out of crap mud flaps for insulation.

I had to mod the spools a bit because the drag mechanisms kept vibrating loose, but other than that, they've been great.

Did some research on the Beaver Dam tip ups and decided too buy five along with the American and Jolly Rodger flags for something different I hope they work as good as they say. Now I'll start catching all the pike on my old tip ups.

Yup, you won't be disappointed, if I didn't have ten heritage lakers, I'd definitely go beaver dam.
