This is a really cool piece on the evolution of the external pack.

    Cool.

I have the total evolution thing going on here with my retired packs.

I have a Jansport external in a lovely 80's teal.

I have a 1990's Kelty with internal frame and no suspension.

Currently I am using an Osprey Argon 85. Full suspension and custom molded hip belt.

The changes in gear in the last 20 years or so is pretty amazing actually. I think back to my wooden snowshoes and external pack with army surplus wool pants and an Air Force winter coat. I then wonder how the eff I ever got anywhere with that gear. I must have been in much better shape as a teen.
