Here is a copy of an email I got yesterday:

Numerous concerns and opinions have been expressed and we would like to provide an opportunity for the public to express their views on this issue. Please join Senators Bishop and Coghill at the Tanana Valley Sportsmenís Association building December 17, 5:30-7:30pm.

    When: December 17, 5:30-7:30pm

    Where: TVSA Building

TVSA Way (off of Boat Street)

    Fairbanks, AK

Questions can be directed to Mike Smith in Senator Bishopís office.

If you don't support cow hunts, and if you do support cow hunts, feel free to attend.

Please explain exactly how and when these hunts have been "expanded". What is different this year than last, or the year before?

Actually, there has been a slight decrease in cow hunts in unit 20. However, the locals are complaining they didn't get a moose this season. Cow hunts are killing their future chances they think.

This is just payback by Bishop to sooth the cries of his supporters from tha last election.

No, doubt anything will change. There has been an anti cow hunt group in the area for a long time. The Dept. has census figures, bull-cow ratios, etc. to document the moose pop. Last year there was an effort to get anti cow hunt guys on the Fbks AC, but that didn't work all that well.

    Here's my census figure...

2011: 10 days afield during hunting season
    24 bulls
    33 cows/calves

2012: 10 days afield during hunting season
    43 bulls
    30 cows/calves

2013: 10 days afield during hunting season
    26 bulls
    29 cows/calves

    How's that ratio??

Granted... I didn't fly over a grid pattern then multiply to get my numbers. Just a couple feet on the ground....

LOL! The point was the ratio....the ratio!

    Vast majority were undersized anyway....

Starting in 2007 ( one week before season) I took video of 20 moose (12 bulls and 8 cows) in field in front of my house. Then every year after a steady decline to the last 2 years of (0) moose??? I do not even hunt them here, but can say without a doubt the cow hunts have caused a decline in local population, this coming from yearly video documentation, pen and paper.

Sorry, I have a hard time pulling overall trends over an entire hunt area or region based on counts in a single open field. I don't doubt your counts, I just don't feel that it is appropriate to expand that VERY limited sampling of the area across the entire unit.
