Default Wooldridge Jet Boat Build---18 Foot Sport, 200 HP

hi guys!...happy to report we are doing it all over again!!...this time with a jet boat!..i have had close calls with the bottom on my 18 foot allumarine boat(rivietted) and figured we better get a REAL boat before i rip the bottom up!!...so, back and forth with grant at Wooldridge and we came up with the sport model with 200 sport jet!...we will be using it on the lakes/rivers and bit of playing in the ocean at times, so its a hybrid of sorts i guess?!!...anyway, will start with a few pics and update as we go along for those interested in boat porn!....and can you believe it?..it was my WIFES idea???....thanks larry

1/4 inch bottom with 3/16ths doubler in planning section. topped up with the 1/2 inch UHMW "plastic"!

Going to be hard to see through those windows. Thanks for posting! I'm still going back and forth on our boat. I really like the XL but ... that ol' ocean calls my name a couple of time a year.

I'll be following your posts to see how the Sport works out for you. What did they say about salt water being trapped under the "plastic"?

hi lenardC!!...yes, the issue with plastic and salt!....when I say "salt" I "may" use it but 99% of the time all fresh!....having salt trapped
under anything is potentially not a good thing but in this case, grant has added a layer of vinyl between the boat bottem and plastic!..so, will it ever corrode, I don't know?...not much of an answer--sorry!!....if it is used in the salt it will get a long soak in the freshwater!..all I can do!!--- or stay out of the salt!!.....there is a group around here that have the plastic on and do both so I will pick their brains before it sees the "chuck!"...thanks larry

I like to stand up when I drive jet boats so we talked about steering wheel and throttle controls heights so , NO, that's not where the wheel goes!!...you can also see part of the double 3/16 plating on the bottem.....the extra channel that goes down the middle is not put in yet!

this is what we decided on to get the wheel up!....stearing is in the upper consul, it will have tilt and the side consel is raised for a higher shifter!...should work good sitting and standing!!

I see on your Pilot House you went with OBs. Why the change to the SJ motor?

You will love that Sport. Is that the 17'? I didn't think they made an 18'
I had a 17' with a 115 on it and it ran as shallow (or shallower) than my old Alaskan, and was tolerable on lakes. That will really perform with that Sport Jet on it. Good choice!

hi lc, it was real close between an etec jet and sj!..I think either would have fit our needs!.....I wont go into the +/- between outboards vs inboard jets-- has been discussed on this forum many times!!

perhaps it was the peer pressure here at work(they all have inboards)!.

..yukoner!, the boat will be an 18 footer!...in the end the 17 footer I thought was too small and 20 was too big for us, so they said ok, how about an 18?..done!.....grant figured I would get a little more lift with a heavy load with the additional length and the 200 hp!.....yep, I agree--should preform really well!!...thanks larry

hi guys, more pics from the Wooldridge plant today!...here is the kicker spot!..wanted a nice stable spot for the kicker motor so grant came up with this idea! ....I want to use the motor at a moments
notice without fiddle ****ing with those motor bracket/hinge things!...I think a lot of you guys know what I am talking about!!....anyway, this will be the spot for the 6 hp tohatsu 4 stroke!.....will use it for trolling and slow cruiseing down the riv while hunting!

shes starting to look like a boat!!...main paint is on now!!

....we are gone down south for a few months this winter and want the boat ready for pick up on the drive home in the end of march!...so there is no real rush on the boat!..but I think grant does just enough to keep the wife and I excited!!

some more pics from the factory!..this boat is gonna be a far cry from the pilot house!..except for the beefed up bottom--this build is pretty bare bones!, no built in seats but will have a wabasto heater!.....

washing down fish and moose/bear blood will be by 5 gallon bucket this time,,not a hose like the "pez gordo"

hi guys!....would be great to have some input on the top!....what do you guys think?...on the water we want a top that keeps out the wind/rain/cold!...but, the odd
time we may sleep In the boat, say throw two cots down, turn up the heat and be at least somewhat comfy!....at this stage am planning a top with the "drop curtain" going back about 1 foot ahead of that front rod holder(alum plate)...so if it is all wet and ugly, put the heat on, and hopefully the drop curtain will not interfere with the butt of the rod and allow easy access to the fishing rod!....2nd pic shows the same gear I will be using on this boat, ....to me it looks like a lot of room for the rod?...I would like to make the back of the drop curtain, say, 8 inches from the rod holder(12 " shown)?......once back at shore and we are camping, planning on a basic travel top that will go from this top down to the transom, so the back is dry, but somewhat lower than the front!...no poles involved!.....I guess I could leave the back slant top on too while on the water?....what thinks?...thanks
    larry

this will be the same gear--dif boat!!

I have a 20' IB wooly sport 2000. I had a full camper back added to my regular canvas cabin. Most the time I leave the top for the camper back up. When I'm dipnetting or the like I take it off. We leave the regular enclosure on all the time. Here is a pic.

You know some times I think an 18' would be ideal sometimes a longer boat would be good. I'm sure the 18'er will be a great boat. If I know Glen the vertical supports for the rail are a standard distance apart. My cabin ends about 6" before the third support, just about where you've drawn it. I have 3' bench seats inside behind the front seats. It's tight but works. I'm 5'9" and can stand up in the cabin but have to bend my head down going through the door. The rear top raises to 6' or just over at the highest. A good canvas person can adjust that to suit your needs pretty easy.

We camp on the boat when to lazy to set up a tent. I have boards that fit on top of the motor cover and throw pads and bags on that. When its all buttoned up the bugs aren't a problem especially with the use of a "thermacell" . In fact the thermacell is great on the deck of the ocean boat in a small tight cove at times in the summer.

The sport is wrapped in a tarp and under snow till spring
