    Default DS384 Sheep Hunt

Son #2, Josh, and I put in for the DS384 draw, I drew but he didn't but said he would help the old man out if I drew so we started making our plans on where and when to go. We decided to fly out with Northwest Aviation out of Kotz on 8/7 and hunt till 8/16.

We got up to Kotz on the early morning flight and by 9:00 we were flying out into the mountains.IMG_0017.jpgIMG_0012.jpg

We landed on a nice gravel bar, set up camp, filled the water bottles, grabbed the spotter and headed up a mtn behind camp to see what we could find.IMG_0024.jpgIMG_0028.jpg

On top and after a long day 1. From the top we spotted a bunch of sheep 3.5 miles to the south and another bunch 5 miles to the north.IMG_0064.jpgIMG_0055.jpg

We scouted the next two days and made a plan of attack for the morning of the 10th then got a good night's sleep. (We love that SL5)Attachment 74108Attachment 74109

We got going early in the morning and were on top in 3 hours. IMG_0071.jpgIMG_0096.jpg We had decided on going after the sheep we saw 3.5 miles south of camp.

We spent the day on top trying to find horns, a couple of nannies didn't quite make it.IMG_0099.jpgIMG_0102.jpg

After a fruitless day looking for horns we chose to head out the next morning giving this first range a break and heading out to the range 5 miles north of us were we spotted sheep.IMG_0151.jpgIMG_0154.jpg

No sheep, but we had a great hike. On the hike out we found this engineers case at the 2800' level. We're guessing it fell out of a helicopter. The hinge was broken. We wondered if the equipment was further up the mtn. We opted not to go back up and find out.IMG_0174.jpg

Our last day to hunt we found this bunch of nannies, kids and a couple of 1/2 curls. These two pick-ups were the closest we came to rams on the trip.IMG_0202.jpgIMG_0216.jpg

My favorite picture of the trip. As we were coming down a ridge we spotted this wolverine a hundred yards away coming up towards us.

Every 50' he would stop and look at us. At 20' away he stopped and I took this picture. He never made a sound he just headed up past us.IMG_0131 WATERMARKED.jpg

Our last day, time to break down camp.

We had an exciting trip, we hiked a total of 45 gps miles, climbed thousands of verticle feet wondering if my 65 year old body would make it, saw caribou, muskox and country I'd never been in before. But what was most special was spending time in the mountains with my son.IMG_0214.jpgIMG_0219.jpg We never saw anyone else, never heard a plane and God willing we'll give it another try next year.

While you didn't fill your "sheep tag", you filled another one more important. I see you already realize that! Way to go guys and thanks for the pics. That is some desolate country in spots.
