Default How many posts required for access??

I've heard a rumor that even though I've registered for the site I have to make a certain number of posts before I can access the full list of forums. Can someone confirm/deny this particular rumor, provide the required number of posts and perhaps shed some insight as to why this may be the case??

    thx. JRT

Yep, the rumor is true. We went through a period of spam attacks here at ODD and this was a policy that grew out of necessity. By restricting viewership of certain forums to full members, we immediately saw a decrease in verbal attacks, anti-hunting diatribes, and people who were only here to spew political rhetoric. The forums that are reserved for members are the trapping and general dicussion forums, as these were the biggest magnets for trouble makers. New members are automatically promoted to members after 21 days and 10 posts. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Yeah, it was a major source of frustration, especially for our volunteer team of moderators that are charged with keeping the peace here. We have an AWESOME community of members here, but for a while there....sheesh, it was getting out of hand. Thanks for your understanding.

Brian, being forum admin how much time does monitoring this site take on a daily basis. I imagine reading everything everyday consumes quite a bit of time!

hunt - Well, first of all I would be here a lot anyhow, so I can't really blame that on being the admin. As admin I have to spend some time dealing with log-in problems and such, but the moderator team does so much that I don't have to spend countless hours here reading every post. I moderate a few forums, but there are others that I only visit as a member unless there is something that needs my attention. The rest of the moderators can edit posts or do other tasks to keep the forums running smoothly, so they make my job easy! Hmmm...I'd say I'm on here at least an hour a day, sometimes more, sometimes a bit less. All of it a joy (well, most of it)!

    Hey Brian
Buddy you will never convince me that moderating some of the discussions in the general topics area is fun! Most of the time I'm left feeling angry, bitterly disappointed and drained. Some are very interesting though.

Rick, if you only read General Discussion you might feel that way with a lot of the sword-slashing that really doesn't benefit anyone, but you have to admit that most of whats on here is first class info on the great outdoors of AK!
    Later! KRM

Agreed totally and completely! And even the heated discussions are really beneficial. Many of the topics discussed are of vital importance too our society and country as a whole. I post and read in all areas, I learn something new at almost every visit and always have fun(when I get too run down by one topic or another I just go to a different area for a while) I just wish folks would remember that while civil debates are very healthy, name calling and bashing one group or another can only be destructive.

PS If ya want a quick grin check out the photo I posted in the catching the bear thread...

Yup my Wife's mother left my Wife in tears after a phone conversation about our up coming family reunion. I couldn't stand to see her that upset so I did the silliest thing I could think of to cheer her up. Worked like a charm and of course she just had to have a photo.

A few more days and some simple "awesome ram" or "great writeup" responses to threads should push you over the mark.

Looking at a more recent thread (http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/...-vs-New-Member) it looks like the numbers have since been adjusted to 1-month and 15 posts to be converted to a "member" from a "new member".
