Default Is this a good deal?

New on the showroom floor Yamaha 2003 40/30 jet $2700. Dealer says it comes with factory warranty. It is a carb model not EFI. Comes with factory tiller, manual tilt and trim, pull rope start no electric. Looking to put on an Alweld 1648 .080" hull, should weigh in about 280lbs. I've been told this motor is good for up to 3 people in the boat. I've got me, wife, and two boys ages 7 and 10. Would this be a good setup? Thanks.

I would opt for 10 more horsepower if at all possible. The boat is rated to 50hp, yes?

The motor may be a good deal but in the end, your still buying a 10yo carb'd motor.

    What's retail on a 2013?
We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed

Alweld's site says 30hp max with tiller, but seen 1652's with larger motors on them (pics that is).

Anybody else? I know its a 10yr old motor, but its not uesd. Just not sure if its not enough HP. Can you get a stainless steel impeller for this size motor to help with performance?

It is a great price on a good motor. I like the all manual (no PT and trim and rope start) for a jet. No need for a battery either. But it really isn't a lot of motor. It is good for two people max on a 16' boat. I had a 1652 SeaArk with a 50/35 and it was only good for 2 people. I had 3 out a lot but that was pushing things.

the 1648 is really old technology for a jetboat. I would also only recommend a jet tunnel hull too. A 1652 or even better a 1660.

I just got rid of my 1652 and now have an 1860 tunnel with a 90/65 and that is really nice.

BUT that motor is a good price. Just don't ask it to do to much.

Thats what I was afraid of hearing. I've been reading the 60/40 would be a better choice, and thats as large as I'm willing to go (weight wise). Was just hoping that the 40/30 work because of the deal. Have also been told if I went with the 40/30 to not go any wider than 48" either and I can understand that. I guess I'm asking too much for a 40/30.
