    Default Lower unit problems

I have a 2009 Yamaha 150 that just started to make a cyclic knocking in the lower unit when I am in rpm's less than 1000. Does anyone have an idea if this sounds like a problem that can be fixed without taking it to the shop? Thanks up front for any positive input.

It could be "prop chatter". Are you running one of the heavier salt water series II props?

Is your prop tightened all the way? A jet will do this if the impeller isn't cinched up all the way.

My prop is a bit loose and I am not running a heavy prop. So I am hoping it is the loose prop. How tight should it be tightened to? Can it be over tightened?

Looks like the torque specs for the prop nut are 40 ft#'s.

When was the last time you replaced your water pump impeller ? Mine has anti knock washers, spacer and collar that should be replaced when installing new impeller. Some models have them and some do not.

I will have to check on that. It sounds like a good possibility. Thanks for the pointer.
