    Default Clearwater Creek and Caribou

My husband and I both drew the DC482 permit for caribou. We were planning on hiking into the Clearwater Creek Controlled Use area (we don't have bikes or atv's). Has anyone had success with hiking in for caribou in this area? Are there any trails (other than the Valdez Road) that are walkable? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Take a wheelbarrow and go back Windy Creek Rd.

Valdez Creek Road and Windy Creek Road are the two popular access points with real trails. Elsewhere it's usually a long hike & pack through the brush, but people have success with that if they're willing to put in the work. It's a beautiful area wherever you go.

In years past we have watched/seen people take canoes/rafts up Clear Water creek. Granted they go up a few miles, but most seem to come back with animals in the water craft. close the 'Crazy Notch' there are some areas that appear easy to hike that would be worth checking out.
    Good luck!

Windy creek would be the easiest walk in. Valdez is a long road. Clearwater itself is a jungle of huge willows with almost no visibility. Second option is camp by the road and glass the mtns sides for caribou.... They are in there for sure. But windy would bet call for a walk in,
Or a thrift store for a bike....

I would park at Alpine Creek and climb up right behind the lodge. There's a simple trail that will take you above the brush, then you can hunt the bowl and mountainsides up in there. Stay the night at Alpine Creek, head up for a day hunt, then come back to a warm meal and a comfy bed. Not a bad way to get it done.

If you are not mobility hampered you do not need a trail to hunt between Clearwater and crazy notch. The tundra is reasonably open and decent walking. You need some brush to stalk the critters, but its density is not an issue when packing out. It all looks the same so make sure you have ribbon to mark your meat pack route and cache. Or a GPS.
