Those of you that drew a Unit 13 Caribou...

    Any Caribou or Bull only??

F&G says the final decision will be on the tag.
We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed

I was particularly looking for the "any caribou" or "bull only".

There had been mentioning a of being bull only but F&G apparently concluded their survey.

Doesn't 'one caribou' mean the same thing as 'any caribou'?

    I'm reading the Tag.....

Last year it was "bull Only" this year it's "one caribou" ......

So you can shoot bull caribou or cow caribou or even calf caribou.

But on the permit it also states: Additional Requirements and Information that you must comply with any additional hunt requirements or restrictions listed in the published permit supplements and in the AK hunting regs for that regulatory year. So I don't think you can kill a cow with calf.....but that's just my speculation.

In the past that was not the case and in other instances with antlerless permits for moose, for example, the restriction against killing a cow with a calf was expressly noted on the permit.

    I would stick to this.

I'd imagine before too long into the season there will be an EO that will go to bull only.

"I'd imagine before too long into the season there will be an EO that will go to bull only"

I disagree. The normal ratio of bulls/cows killed is about 3 bulls for every 2 cows. Last year they never met the quota for cows or bulls even by the end of the winter season. this year there is a larger quota yet.

While that's true, f&g said there was a lot of mortality on adult and calf bou this year due to the late spring which will effect the overall quota for this fall hunting season.

Have you seen anywhere that stated the quota? Last I checked, nothing had been published, but I haven't looked around in the last week or so. I know we were predicting a larger quota, but never saw anything official stating as such.

Are you saying there might be a chance that any unit 13 tag might turn into a unit wide tag?

Not at all. Not sure where you got that from what I posted. I simply stated that I haven't seen any official statement of a quota. INITIALLY, we thought there would be a higher quota than last year because of the quota not being reached last year and a relatively warm winter. More recent information has indicated that the strange spring weather may have had a bigger negative impact on the herd, resulting in likely a smaller quota. Either way, I seriously doubt they would combine the units like they did last year. Last year, the large herd size caught them completely off guard. This year, I would think they would have had a better idea of what would be coming which would explain why they issued 50% more permits up front this year than they did total last year. Personally, I would think it would detrimental to the unit if they combined the sub-units as it would focus a huge number of hunters on a few of the easier to access areas, totally overwhelming them and probably wiping out other species hunted along with caribou such as moose.
