Thread: Not making goals!!!

    Default Not making goals!!!

Didn't want to be negative, but it occurred to me that its important for everyone to realize we will no doubt overescape the Kasilof with sockeye this year. Historic data shows that 500,000 is the estimated replacement point for that river, and we may well see that escapement level, especially with setnetters benched this weekend until ADFG figures the Kenai King numbers out. A Kasilof Sockeye escapement at this level will mean less Sockeye for Alaskan freezers and bank accounts in the future. Go kill some Kasilof Sockeye everyone!!!

Well at least the drifters were out there all day helping to crop that Kasilof escapement down...

"In order to slow the rate of escapement of sockeye salmon into the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers, while minimizing the harvest of Kenai River late-run king salmon, fishing with drift gillnetters in the Expanded Kenai and Expanded Kasilof Sections is warranted.

All areas and gear types will fish the regularly scheduled fishing period on Monday, July 15, 2013."

Yeah, unless you fish northern UCI say mat-su and the drift fleet impacts you more directly than ESSN. I have a feeling monday won't be a big day at Jim Creek, or Little Su, or Montana Creek. I am willing to have that trade off honestly, but not to pretent it doesn't happen.

Willphish how does that 33,000 compare to the last couple years catch at this time? Those caught in nets are one point that helps show run strength.

    Not making goals?

Case in point... Kenai LR kings

Passage by this date is now SOLIDLY DEAD LAST in the history of record-keeping.

Comparing to the three previously worst years....

2012 (just dethroned as suckiest LR king run ever) was about 20% better by this date.
2011 was over 100% better by this date
2010 was over 50% better by this date

Is the run making escapement goals?

Where are the figures for your claims above?

If true, what is to be done?
