Default PA-11 "Cub Special" down on Montaque Island

A Coast Guard helicopter crew has rescued the pilot of a light plane that crashed on takeoff from Alaska's Montague Island after the plane's propeller reportedly struck a wave.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Grant DeVuyst (De-VOIST) said the helicopter crew was on a training flight Thursday when they located the stranded pilot of the Piper PA-11 after the downed aircraft sent out a distress signal.

The spokesman says the Coast Guard crew spotted the uninjured pilot standing on top of the plane near shore. The helicopter landed on the beach and crew members helped the pilot pull the plane to shore and secure it. They then flew him to Cordova.

DeVuyst says the pilot took off from the beach but the propeller hit a wave and the plane crashed just offshore.

Montague Island is at the entrance to Prince William Sound.

Was it at the SE side at the Nelly Martin river ... it gets a run of red salmon, have always wanted to land there but I have been told that the sand is real soft ...
