    Default Denali Hiway

    Hello all. Has anyone trapped beaver on the Denali Hiway on the season opener.? Late September seems early even there.? I was looking closer to the Cantwell side. I know it depends on weather, light conditions and so forth as far as hide quality. Any input would be appreciated Thanks for all your comments.

    NJ,
    I know several people (myself included) that trap the Denali highway during the early beaver season. Anything close to the road usually gets hit pretty hard. I think most of the folks are primarily looking for a few carcasses for bait when the general opener starts later in the season. The hides are generally pretty flat in September, so if you are looking for fur quality pelts from open water, you are better off to go after beaver in the Spring, IMO.

    Spike;

    Thanx for the reply. I kind of figured it was to early in the season for hide quality. Do you know why the season is open so early.?

    NJ,
    No idea about the reason for the early season. It also applies to muskrats (but not otters) in those same GMU's. You might try asking your local ADF&G office.

    IF you are looking on the Cantwell side note where you are a lot of the land for the first 25 miles or so is AHTNA land right off the highway.
