The wiki entry says they're found 600' or deeper. You must have been way down there.
I watched an eagle grab a fish off the water one day and it was a rat fish. It was alive too. I always thought they were a deep deep water fish.
Same here. I've picked one up in shallow water while targeting sand dabs. They sure are funny looking critters. Must have been pretty cool to see an eagle take one off the surface.
I caught them in lucky cove by thorne arm in about 100'.
Gotta love those dentures they wear. I used to have a reel service guy that used rat fish liver oil for all his reels. Boil down the liver for the oil, it's finer than sewing machine oil.
