    Default Upper Gulkana

Last week we rolled out early monday morning to avoid the weekend warriors. We got caught in construction traffic and I threatened to make one of my fishing buddies ride in the very back.

We were on the water at the crack of noon, but it took a couple of hours to cross the lake, then we fished. My eight year old built his first fly rod and initiated it a soon a we reached the river.

    We saw some fish food.

    We camped.

    My buddies fished.

I made them take turns rowing so I could try fly fishing.

We camped some more, and then I finally got the hang of fly fishing.

Great way to spend time as a family.

This was my third time on that river, it was faster and higher than the other two trips. I clocked us at 6 mph for a couple of miles on my gps. There are a few sweepers that will be an issue as the water drops, but we never really got hung up on rocks this trip.

There were fewer reds than I saw on my other two trips, but this was an earlier trip and later spring than 2010 or 2011.
