    Default Historic Alaska

Nice images and how do I get there?

I really want to put together a book of historic photos of Alaska. Any hints as far as locations would be much appreciated.

    Default road to McCarthy

Eddie, the mine is down the road from McCarthy. The turnoff is south of Glenallen as you would be heading to Valdez. Memorial Day weekend is usually a good one for photos. The 3hr leg on the gravel will provide many opps for wildlife photos, bear, birds, etc... There is usually a fly in breakfast on private property with a lake on the left side approx 10 miles before McCarthy on that weekend as well. Some really nice planes if you like some other nice photos.
Once you get to McCarthy you need to park & walk over the foot bridge. From there you can take a shuttle to the mine & hike to the glacier for more photos. If you have never been I highly reccomend it. But bring a spare tire as the road can be rough on vehicles.

Actually, those black clouds in that first photo make the picture. I love it!

Very nice pictures, specially the first one.

Tull777: Over by Black Rapids on the Richardson, there is a log cabin by the road that was a Roadhouse (Rapids Roadhouse) on the Valdez Trail back in the early 1900s. The cabin will soon be gone because of safety reasons, however. That roadhouse was owned by Frank Glacer (correct spelling?), a now famous hunter, trapper, and guide who later worked for Fish & Wildlife.

Thanks for all of the info. I look forward to checking them all out. Any other locations that you can add would be great. Alaska is amazing and I can't imagine living any other place on the planet. Maybe a few years down the road I will grow tired of it ...NOT!

    Thanks again ..........Eddie
