Default Powder to Start for 375 HH / 270gr TSX?

    Hey guys -

I'm moving up to Eagle River, and just gave away the last of my powder down here; I'll be re-stocking over the next few weeks, and I've acquired a 375 holland and holland which I have never handloaded for before.

I also found some 270 gr TSX bullets at a good price, so looking for a powder that will be suitable.

Bonus points if I can utilize the same powder for some other toys (45-70 down to 308) but not required. A few references suggested H4895?

    Thanks in Advance

    Default One is not enough

The H4895 is a very good powder and ideally suited for the 308 it isn't however the best for the other two, though it will work.

Varget or RL-15 are probably the two best powders for the H&H and 270 grain bullets. The old 45-70 will be at it's best with H322 or RL-7, depending on bullet weight, but H4895 will be a good choice for 400 grain and heavier bullets. So...at best I'd say buy two powders, H4895, and RL-15 for the H&H. If you plan to also load 300 grain bullets for the H&H maybe H4350 would be the best choice for 300's and pretty good for 270's as well. But what do I know....I've only loaded 1,114,618 rounds in the past 42 years, and still loading.

Are you driving up the Cassiar? Nice road.
Is there nothing so sacred on this earth that you aren't willing to kill or die for?

    Default Thanks.

    Thanks Murphy -

I haven't tried Varget in the 4570, but I have had excellent accuracy with it in the 308 with 165 gr bullets.

Having one do-it-all powder isn't a requirement for me, but it sure is nice to consolidate where you can. I just gave away 22 partial canisters of everything from Unique to Goex fffg to H4831, and it was painful to see it all go.

I've only loaded 20k rounds over the last 22 years, so I'll defer to ya on this one.

I have good luck with IMR 4064 and RL-15 in my .375 H&H.

    Welcome to Alaska!
