Kuiu Island information
Hello all, hope everyone is having a great year.
I just came back from some mountain trout fishing for 4 days with some buddies, had a great time!
I'm coming to Kuiu Island for a fall black bear hunt. I'm wondering if there is down and dead wood to burn for fires, or if everything is wet and mossy all the time.
Hopefully someone knows.
Six of us are coming and we're looking forward to the experience.
While in SE plan on wet and mossy and you won't be disappointed.
just bring 2 or three good sized tarps and u can usually stay dry and keep fire going. also bring some boy scout juice to get a fire going if you need to.
if that doesnt work stay warm and dry with a jug of hooch works every time.
KRS, Plan on it being wet, Real WET! I have spent some time on the north end of Kuiu, hunting, fishing and working. You should have no problem finding wood to burn on the beach, or some down wood, but it will be wet. With some good fire starter you shouldbe able to get something going.
WOW six of you are going!
If you have any question send me a PM and I can see if I can help.
there's trees, if that's what you mean. seriously:
standing dead trees, deadfalls or dead lower limbs usually burn better than anything on the ground which will be sopping wet. bring one of those triangular pruning saws.
Lots of good information, thank you!
Six of us are going to split the boat ferry ride from Wrangell to the island (very expensive). We'll do a lot of hiking to keep off of each other, but it will be worth it.
KRS, Kuiu Island has a 120 bear limit for out-of-state hunters. If that quota is met during the spring hunt you will not be able to hunt Kuiu. I would suggest you contact ADF&G in Petersburg before you leave. You might want to consider looking at POW as an alternative location if the quota has been filled. Good luck, you can find all the firewood you want on Kuiu, it will have to be dead standing but there is plenty. Jim
