Default Bad day for surf launching in Cook Inlet today....

Friend of mine with a charter just posted this pic to Facebook. He cancelled his trip for the day, but not everyone used the same judgement. And now they are wishing they had:

I went down to the south shore of Turnagain Arm to look for fresh bear tracks..........40 MPH with Gusts 65 MPH at the narrows. I only carry my 19 pound survival pack about 55% of the time on my daily hikes. I had it today and was happy I did, as I crawled deep in a growth of baby Hemlocks.

I need to carry it 100% of the time.

Think of all the gas they saved not towing those boats all the way to Homer.
I have been out in much bigger seas out of Homer but once we were in the Harbor it wasn't a problem getting on the trailer.
That hurts just looking at it. It had to be a scarry experience.

That's what you get when you miss the trailer or hit your trailer so hard you destroy it.

My Dad was down watching all the excitement, he was going to send me some more photos.

That was the "half price special ". 34 dollars and You get the choice of the 'put in' OR 'the take out'. Many folk just opt for full price. You gotta read the fine print, people.

Sheesh....I'm sorry for their misfortune...I wish there was a video of the entire goings on. For me, it would be like a tutorial on how to turn your almost completed project boat back into a major project in 60 seconds or less!

Wow that is unfortunate. Hope everyone was OK. I bet those boat have insurance but what a PITA.

I was out there yesterday; it was not a pleasant day to be out on the water. Constant 4's but the were really steep.
I was on Lynn Keogh's boat and his son Levi put in on the trailer nicely but the rollers on the beach were a pucker factor for many. We left before the boat on beach festivities began.

With my limited experiance out of deep creek, I find most days are a pucker factor! My first time launching was a gem in 2-3 foot seas. I got pushed out into the surf and went to start the boat when I realized the keys weren't in the ignition... There always in the ignition. By the time my buddy pulled them from his pocket I was getting close to being like the Alumaweld in the picture is. His excuse... He didn't want me to lose the keys...

I had a fuel bulb failure in the Homer harbor-no big deal. I got a pull back to the dock. If it had been the beach, you could have substituted my Kingfisher in this picture. I think I will continue to drive around.

I remember when they did not exist, been fishing down there for 40 years. Who remembers the year or two that there were tractors and skidded, two separate companies?

And the Hope Passing lanes where the Hope corners.
And Good Time Charlie's WAS a good time.
And the Russian River Ferry was $1, and you where given a token to get back.
And Sportsmans was a great place to grab a burger or a cabin and some tackle, not just an overpriced boat ramp...
