    Default Deep creek halibut

Hit deep creek yesterday. Managed a few halibut. Lost the largest one of about 40 lbs since the captain (me) forgot to put the gaff in the boat. It was slow going early but after the tide flipped we had a feeding frenzy on for about an hour. No kings to speak of but we werent really targeting them either. All and all a nice day and it was great to get out of the house and finally get some summer.

I talked with an old time guide out of Deep Creek today. He said that halibut are slow to medium in catch rate but he has not found one sick one this season. That is good news. Apparently what was missing in their diet last year is not missing this season.

Ive yet to catch a sick one. Granted I dont catch nearly what a guide does in a year but I was thinking that these sick fish were sorta like the big foot.

Let's hope so. I've caught them out of Seward, Homer and Whittier now.

Im really stating to believe it now. I am wanting to fish and hunt so bad that I am bringing the bad weather. I washed my truck too so that really sealed the deal.

Just got a call from my Dad (Jack in Alaska), he is sitting on the beach in Deep Creek watching several boats get pounded by the surf. One is laying on its side on a tralier, one in full of water and laying in the surf and there was another boat about to try to onto its trailer...

Another good reason to fish out of Homer. Once you are in the Homer harbor you are realtively safe.
I have a friend with a nice dent in his boat from hitting his trailer wrong on a heavy surf day at the tractor launch.

Yuck. We have plans for that area on monday but we shall see. May just go to homer and use the launch. Could use some bait fish anyway. If I knew where to find mother nature I'd give her a slap and straighten her out.

I had a buddy text me a picture that shows 2 of the 28'-30' deep creek boats sideways on the beach in the surf, that had to be an exciting day! I think there ended up being 3 boat that hit the beach without a trailer yesterday.

Saturday was crazy. We were at Whiskey Gulch. I tried to get out.

    EPIC FAIL!!!!

No thanks to the wipeout, I lost my harpoon stick which was brutal when Sunday I hook a halibut that won't fit into my net. Argh. Maybe 50 pounds. Lost it when the clip snagged the net.

Did manage a 32 inch 15 pound king.

Too bad I caught it so late on Sunday so my video batteries were dead. Bummer. Still it was a blast. The king had three tiny sandlances in it.

Two in our group managed halibut but it was very slow.

We rolled out of anchor point on monday and managed 3 butts. Again all around 20 lbs or so. We lost our 4th one which seemed noticeably larger but we will never know. Either way weather wasn't bad and the fishing was slow but we did boat a few.
