Default The Whittier Parking Lot is Open

I was out boating today, and noticed that the lot has been plowed and looks ready for use.

Looks like about a foot of ice, too. Could make it interesting as it softens up.

Yep. It's always a trailer buster there in the spring I hope the new guys running that lot take better care of it.

I talked to them, as of yesterday they were being told it would be the 30th before they could put anyone in there because of the ice. They were gonna let me know if it would happen sooner.

Will Whittier gig you for property tax if you leave your boat in the parking lot all summer?

No, it's $600 plus $30 tax for the whole season.

I just moved the boat. It's open on the east end but its slushy and icy. 4 wheel drive is a must.

I didn't ask about the daily rate but the annual rates stayed the same. I expect the daily rate did as well.

I know this is kind of off subject, but is the fishing good enough in Whittier to justify leaving your boat there for the season. I'm new to the Whittier area and would like to explore more but also found that the fishing is good in say, Seward. I'm not opposed to leaving my boat there if the fishing is good.

It's a factor of a couple of things. One, we camp on our boat more than we fish, so PWS is great. Two, I get 8mpg towing the boat down and pay $300 for the tunnel. I get 20mpg driving the truck down and pay $12 for the tunnel without the boat. So the fees are much cheaper to leave it there. If the tunnel was only $35 it would still be nice not to have the wear and tear going back and forth. When I did the math with a $35 tunnel fee and paying fuel in Whittier, in my case it was about a wash and I didn't have the hassle and wear and tear on the boat. My neighbor is considering leaving his boat there for the summer and then when he wants to go to Seward he will just stop and pick up the boat on the way and then drop it off on the way back. I do miss having the boat in the driveway sometimes.

I'm planning on it if the boat is fixed by then. Sounds like it will be.
