Thread: Fishing season starts when for most

Default Fishing season starts when for most

Out of the Seward area when does the fishing season (charter business) start in earnest? I know different fish for different months but on average when do most of you charter owners commence with your season?

Not a charter operator just a customer, but my first trip of the year is booked for this Saturday out of Seward.
When all else fails...ask your old-man.

I think most boats run Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Those that are successful in Alaska are those who are flexible, and allow the reality of life in Alaska to shape their dreams, vs. trying to force their dreams on the reality of Alaska.

If you have a tenuous grasp of reality, Alaska is not for you.

A couple already started. Others start may 1 or around the first part of may. Depends on booking.

I towed a boat back in from Montague to Seward first week of May a couple of years ago and didn't see another boat - all the way back during the 10 hour tow. Not much going on that early. Activity usually starts picking up mid-May and by the last week of May all the charter guys are in the water.

Blown off the water both sat/sun. Northerly winds at 30kt make for a wicked day.

Yeah, it was a windy weekend in Seward but managed to get the tarp off and the boat in the water Saturday. Only got out for a short ride Saturday evening but heard Diane on the Florette C coming in on the radio and wanted to run by J-Dock to see if she did her magic for kings but didn't get a chance. Sunday blew too hard for us to get out so stayed in the harbor. Hoping this next weekend will be better!

They are catching some Kings now but it has been very windy for a small boat. Fish House is running now and the rest begin in a week or two. Nik and Steve are starting in a week and I will be running my first charter on May 22nd this year. I have commercial fishing to do first.
Usually the last two weeks of May and First two of June are quite and the fishing is some of the season's best.

Do you care to tell us more? As I recall you got some IFQ with the idea that you could use it with charter clients in the future. Are you using your boat to do this, and how tough is it to get set up to do this? Sorry if my questions are over the line, but your comment seemed interesting.
