Thread: Treble to Single changeover

    Default Treble to Single changeover

All of my Vibrax, Mepp's and spoons have treble hooks but it appeared to me that single hooks are required in a lot of areas. What is your favorite hook and size for said areas??

Depends what you're fishing for and where, but when I fish with those lures (ice fishing, generally) I just cut off two of the hooks, above the bend. Some of them now come with a single hook, too - just take off the treble and put on the single. It's not a big deal. I've had a ranger ask to see my tackle and he was fine with the Mepps with two of the hooks cut off.

I like to use an appropriately sized Mustad C47S D Shrimp Hook. It was just what I happend to have around when I was switching one year because the regulations required it, and it's worked well for me. I also always add a split ring, so that I don't have to get out the wire cutters every time I want to change hooks in the future.

What split rings do you use?

I think some of them have a weight rating. I lost what I can only assume was a monster king to a split ring last year. It pulled the whole hook right off my vibrax and headed down river like a rocket.

I'll have to check when I get home, but I'm pretty sure I use these:

in the 5 1/2H size, which it says has a 100lb test rating. I trust them way more than the siwash hook vibrax includes that you pinch the eye shut yourself on. I've never had a split ring failure.
