    Default Drift boat on gulkana

I have seen drift boats on the lower Gulkana. I always use a raft. Wondering if there would be a problem with a drift boat from Sourdough to the Bridge.
A friend wants to take his drift boat as he backtrolls it better.

No major problems with Sourdough to the bridge. It's the kind of water drift boats were made for.

With that said you need to be able to read water well and it's not a trip for an inexperienced rower.

I will expand a little on this subject. Low Water it is not kind to drift boats. Certain sections have flat rock boulders which if you get run up on will potentially damage your boat. Couple of boulder gardens nothing bad just not fun at low water in a drift boat. That being said normal water conditions yes a Drift boat should not be an issue.

There are those who run Dories on the Middle section of the river and when they close the K Pen rivers on some years we see more than our normal share of them. Most years you can hear them coming down the river before you see them ;-)

Thanks for the responses. Looks like we will hit the Gulkana on the 18th of june. My guess is we will target reds like last year. Who knows about the king run.

To many people ;-) Give the ADF&G a call honestly the past several years the fishery is in decline and has closed to C&R, no bait etc........ without getting into the politics of it all over the forum feel free to PM me if know one else shares data.

We see a few on that section and it is actually better below SD than it is below Salior's Pit. Slower water and less rocks. The real test would be the flow of the river. The Gulkana drops quickly in mid-late June and the lack of water will be the real sticking point (get my joke?) Keep tabs on the river flow and shoot me an e-mail the week before you are coming up and I will give you some real time info.

Thanks for the responses. Am trying to show my military co-workers a little real Alaska. Fishing is secondary.

I will start writing Gulkana Reports in June. If your after Kings shoot for June 15th. If you after Rainbows head down from Paxon as soon as ice is out about June 1-7.
