    Default Whittier

When is the earliest you can typically fish out of Whittier? Does anyone know the ice conditions out in the sound right now? We wanna do some scouting for a hunt and possibly fish while we are out if the conditions are ok. Anyone have reports or suggestions?

This time of the year, the sound is usually pretty nice. Check out NOAA weather nwoand it's 10 knots 2' all week. The snow levels area really low right now. Not much snow this year is gonna be great for the deer and I'm thinking the bears will be out a little bit earlier, but not much. I've read that they keep a pretty regular sleep pattern no matter what. The sound is pretty much ice free, but you will find some here and there in smaller coves or places like Culross Passage. Fishing is really slow early season. Really Slow.... But being on the water anytime of the year is better than sitting at home. If you go out, be sure to give us a report. I went out in January with AKLuvr95 and it was amazing.

excellent to know. Thanks. I think we are gonna give it a shot depending on the weather obviously. I will make sure to sound off after the successful or not trip.

Might call ahead to the harbor master and check the condition of the ramp before you go.
Might need chains or who knows this time of year.
    Just a thought.

My plan is to launch March 22-26 before Tanners close the end of the month. Wanted to go the last week of March [historically warmer] but couldn't due to work. Let me know if you're going during this timeframe. We plan on dropping pots and heading to Royal Wave oyster farm to help with some pre-season maintenance work while the pots soak.

They do. The pots he was referring to are crab pots targeting tanner crabs.

Yup, Tanner season in PWS ends March 31st...

My fresh crab low-light is illuminated!!
After being shut out with Rob B in January [a great warm/sun shiny trip despite the crab not cooperating] I plan on doing my best to extinguish that low-light ~ LoL
Wish you could be there Rob B ~ wx dependent of course...
But...Nobody goes until maw nature says so.
I expect we will have many noteworthy adventures as the season progresses.

I need to talk to ya about your next trip and leaving your pots in place. I'll take care of them for a few day after you leave.......

Shouldn't be an issue since you already have a permit.

Went down there today. Boat ramp was not in too shabby condition. There was ice on it but it was very soft and only about an inch thick. It broke up by just stepping on it. Got the boat in the water all was good. Rounded the bend.... no go. Something is up with the carbs on my buddies boat. Sounds like they are gunked up. Spent an hour or so out there messing around with em to no avail. Had to trailer it and go home. Bummer. Maybe next time.

Darn that sucks. Even if you get it running better, throw some seafoam in the gas. That stuff works wonders. Thanks for the info on the ramp though.

Thats exactly what I told him to do. He put stabil in it for winterization but I dont think it got into the carbs and engine fuel filter. Some sea foam will clear that junk right out.
