    Default Sporterized 1903 questions

I have a friend who has a 1903 and was told it was a 308 not a 30-06 so he tried to fire a 308 round and the case is now stuck in the chamber. Is there an easy way to get it removed or is it better to replace the barrel. It had already been sporterized so it wont be ruining it anymore than it already is. Is there a place in town that will put the new barrel on. Also what are your opinions on caliber? 338-06 or 35 whelen or something else other than 30-06.

The case should be easy to remove with a piece of drill rod - a piece of 1/4" should work but better to have one closer to bore size. DO NOT USE A CLEANING ROD - ESP AN ALUMINUM ONE. The weight of the rod dropped in the barrel may dislodge the case; if not a couple of whacks with a light hammer should remove it easily.

.308 commercial rounds are too large at the shoulder to normally chamber in an '06 while 7.62 US military ammo should function and fire OK. The 7.62 was designed so it could be used in a '06 chamber with an adapter or in an emergency while Winchester didn't want the .308 to be able to be fired in an '06 at all, esp in something like a .270 chamber.

Take it to a gunsmith and have them remove the case and check out the chamber/bore, the bolt, and the action. What is the serial number (in broad terms, i.e. is it less than 800,000 if a Springfield Armory)? If below 800,000, don't shoot it.

Probably the cheapest fix is to put on a Criterion (division of Krieger) 30-06 on it if the barrel is damaged or un-shootable.
