Thread: Hatcher Pass

    Default Hatcher Pass

HP opened last saturday. Several of us went up and helped with marking the new boundries as well as passing out new maps in the parking lots. We wanted to get as much information out as possible about the new management plan and especially the changes in boundries. Lots of snowmobilers were involved in the process and our idea was to talk with as many folks as possible to help with the changes.

For people familiar with Hatchers Pass, you likely won't see many definitive changes. The main change is that the first couple miles of Archangel road has been designated non-motorized. There is a motorized trail just to the side of the actual road. This gives some seperation without costing any access areas. The Reed Lakes area remains non-motorized, but the area on all sides around it was changed to motorized. That gives a bunch of fairly benign terrain for new riders and family trips to access without the extra pressure of scaling one of the passes to get to a relaxing area to play. Marmot mountain has been closed ( it actually was designed to have been closed a while ago, but never enforced).

West side riders will see no changes in access. Grooming and trail marking are happening as we speak.

Last weekend several of us spent the morning in the parking lots talking to arrivals about the changes and giving out maps and information to as many people as we could. We are going to be doing that again this weekend. Anyone who is interested in lending a hand, please give me a call and i will coordinate times and areas with you. Last weekend folks started arriving about 10 am and we bailed from the parking lots about 12. That gave us plenty of time to ride and explore the new snow while fulfiling our committments to new riders and other riders not familiar with the new management boundries.

We rode yesterday in the cold, but Im glad we did. Snow was decent in depth, but nicely set up underneath with a bit of powder on top. We were met in the GM lot by the ranger who passed out maps and talked a bit about the changes. We ended up riding up the drainage to the east-ish of Reed Creek. Lots of terrain, and pockets of deeper powder snow up there. Great first ride.

just got home, outandabout had a pretty good report. We went west over the pass and into the Willow side. Same type of snow. Good pockets when you looked for them. Started out cold but almost got to zero before we bailed.

I do have some of the handout/maps left if anyone wants one. There is a guy doing formal avalanche forecasting for HP...Good stuff...
