Default what are you using as self defense ammo in handgun

Sorry if this is a worn out issue on this board. Bought the wife a Ruger LC9 this weekend. Looking for reccomendations on what to load the gun with. I've heard many good things about the Federal JHP in 115 grain. Others?

I carry .40 with Remington Golden Saber 180 Grain BJHP that is a great round. They make both a 124 grain and 147 grain BJHP for a 9mm. They will cost you about 30 bucks a box of 25 for 9mm.

I load either a 255gr WFN or a 255gr SWC to about 950fps in .45 Colt for nine months of the year.

For summertime I have been loading a 158gr SWC in .38Spec to more or less the "FBI load".

Golden Sabres and Gold Dots are used by a high percentage of police departments. I would use one of those or talk with a local cop and ask what he's issued. If your using what your local law enforcement is using you have some argument protection should you ever have to sit on the stand. I run Speer Gold Dot production ammo in my home and carry 40S&W's.

For my wife's little KAHR 9mm popgun we settled on Hornady Critical defense 125 grains. They are the most accurate from her gun and they work when they go through clothing. I tested them on slabs of pork.

For my Taurus M-445 UL 44 Special pocket blaster, I use 240 grain Keith SWCs and 7.5 grains of Power Pistol. (WW BRASS AND WLP)
It gives me 825 fps from the 2.1 inch barrel. And they shoot right where the fixed sights point.

Sometimes I carry my old 1964 vintage Colt Python with Federal 125 gr 357mag hollow points.

In the airplane or in the woods I carry either my old M-29 44 mag or my 10mm Glock 20 loaded with hot 200 grain flat nosed FMJs. They clock at just over 1,200 fps over my chronograph.

I like Win Ranger or PDX1 in 45 and 9mm. FWIW, a guy can't go wrong with any of the major brands with premium bullets I think. Rem Golden Sabers, Federal Hydra Shok or HST, Speer Gold Dot, Hornady XTP, and probably several more out there. I would stick with the 115-124gr bullets in that pistol, buy plenty to test enough to ensure reliability. Cheaper if you can find the 50 round boxes so you can run some thru it. Funny how some pistols will favor one brand bullet profile over the other as far as feeding goes. Stick with the one that is 100% reliable and you should be good to go. I think the difference between the top brands has greatly diminished as bullet making technology has advanced.

I like the Winchester Ranger, 230 gr JHP it is a +P load and clocks 960 fps from my 5" 1911 and about 920 fps from the G21SF, I think 4.6" bbl.

It is available in 9x19 and 40 also. Very accurate ammo and consistent in performance with a very good price tag $36.00 for 50 rounds in 45 ACP.

Sorry, I don't have a 9mm. I like the Winchester Bonded PDX1 Personal Defense 180gr in 40 S&W though. They are a little pricey though.
