    Default Big Lake Ice fishing

This is my first year ice fishing at Big Lake. The action seems a bit slow, but that is what I have read is normal. I have a had a little luck so far... I am looking for pike or burbot, which I have not caught yet. No problem catching trout though. I am fishing the north-east side in about 15 ft. I fish all day, from sun up to just after sun down. I jig a lot and keep a couple tip-ups going with herring. Any tips?

Try a little deeper, maybe try at night as well if it's legal. I have had some success on them in about 20 to 30 feet with glow in the dark jigs tipped with herring.

I will also say I have never fished big lake, but have caught them in other lakes. So take my advice with a grain of salt.

Big Lake does have pike but I don't believe they are in big numbers yet. Thankfully or there would be no trout. I'm not a big ice fisherman but I fish soft water. Big lake is mostly known for it's trout, burbot, and big Char/Dollys. I would go after the Char.

I just read the regs on big lake, and saw you can't use bait for burbot, so disregard my advice on the glow jigs and herring. For pike I would try Nancy or Red Shirt.

You can use herring for pike in Big Lake so long as you're fishing solely for pike... that is, if you catch a burbot you have to throw it back ASAP. Agree that Big Lake is far from a reliable hot spot for pike.

If your determined to catch pike on big lake, set up near or just inside the fish creek outlet. Should be some lurking there.
