Trustworthy Hardware in Soldotna usually has some decent deals on reels this time of year. The sell good stuff too.

I like the looks and styling of these Okuma reels sold by Pelagic outfitters but they are a bit pricey at around $500 for the one I would want.

Like Hoose35 said Trustworthy is a good place for sales this time of year.

I do like the looks of that Okuma Makira. Looks a lot like the Penn Torque reels.
If I didn't already have a full set of Halibut rods and reels on my boat I just might consider buying one.

I like the look. Last summer I bought a couple Avet JXs (jury still out, had some issues on some MXLs) for the jigging rods and the then bought a couple Shimano TLD20A in the two speed for the heavier rods. The TLDs are more along the size of my other Pen 340s but they are sweet reels. I love the gearing and they seem to be pretty bulletproof. Next summer on them will tell more.

I bought an Avet 2 speed this year and loved it. I bought the HX2 and it worked like a charm.

I love this thread. Killing two birds (or a bird and dog) with one stone.

Wow, MGH!!! I didn't think you had it in you. Honestly (and I am NOT being facetious), I appreciate your attempt at putting a stop to this ridiculous behavior.

I agree on the thought that kgpcr has said---I don't think you can go wrong with an Avet. I think a $200 Avet is everything a $400 Okuma Makaira is. Maybe not exactly the same, but for a reel that's going to work for you day after day and year after year I'd put my money on Avet. I like Accurate, too, but they're a bit on the pricey side.

Once again, thanks Matt for trying to put this back on track. My faith in Santa has been restored!!!! (And the exclamation points are a tribute to Nemo!!!!)

I just went trough my Penn International 965's, and my box of 2speed Shimano Tiagra's. Looks like I should be good for some time unless I see one I just can"t live without.

I have a couple of Penns that I am going to get rid of this winter. I bought a Shimano Tekota 700 last summer and that reel was awesome. If anyone is looking for some heavy Penns in good shape let me know.

Are they the older style Penn 340s?

I have a brand new 345GT with a spool of 80lb braid. The other one is a used but in good shape 335 or 340 with a spool of 80lb braid used one outing. I have to pull it out of storage to check. Willing to do so if you are interested.

After checking the storage box it appears that both of the reels that I will be selling are 345GTs. One is used and looks a lot like the one in your picture, the other is brand new, only taken out of the box to string it up (took it as a spare last year but never used it).
