Thread: Chicken Winter Caribou Hunt

  1. #1

    Question Chicken Winter Caribou Hunt

Anyone done it and have experience they can share?

I imagine the roads are decent since there hasn't been that much snow...

Is everything closed in Chicken this time of year?

Is there much success with road hunting?

Or should we go in on the trails some?

etc... Any input will be appreciated!

I think your first question to find an answer for will be "IF" F&G decides to move forward with this hunt. Dispatch from Nov 16th states they may postpone to avoid a slaughter if the herd is too close to or ON the road.

On that note, caribou are where you find them. No telling where they may or may not be.

Nothing open in Chicken this time of year.

Before assuming the roads are good up there you might want to make a call to Tok and ask, snow conditions can vary greatly between Anchorage and Chicken.

The hunt will happen but it just might not happen while the caribou are near anything that hunters can reach.

Haven't seen anything from fish and game other than they are going to make the determination today on if / when and HOW they will open the hunt.

and you have to drive to Fairbanks, Delta jct or Tok to get your permit as well. Unless you live in those areas then you are set.

    Default Chicken Winter Caribou Hunt

    Mod_elan- where's the herd??
We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed

Thanks for all the concern, but I am already waiting on F&G announcement, already got my 867 permit ONLINE, and I live in Fbx not Anchorage.

Anyone got experience with the winter hunt though? Looking for experience, lessons learned, etc....

    Thanks again!

Announcement is already out. Its gonna be a typical winter road trip in Alaska. Have your truck up to snuff, pack a generator if you have one, tarp, space heater. It's gonna be cold. All in all, be prepared for the elements and be prepared to travel to find the bou, F&G gave an obvious hint as to where they are concentrated.

    See post #3.

    It can be real cold

There are very few people out and about in that area once you get away from the Steese

The caribou can and will be wherever they want to be

The road that are not maintained year round can have a lot of snow or very little snow so it is best to talk with someone that lives close to them prior to making a long drive.

Sound like it is going to be a slaughter fest. Orange vests and bullet proof vests would not be a bad idea if you feel the need to be up there.
