I thought some of you might be interested in Skagway's gardening initiative. In 2011, Skagway Borough passed an initiative which set aside $5000 from the municipality's landscaping funds to be used by individuals to plant fruit or nut trees. An individual can get paid up to $20 per tree for a total of 5 trees. The initiative will continue through 2013. This summer the Borough passed a second initiative which set aside another $5000 for individuals who maintain an existing garden or start a new garden. The gardening initiative will grant $.50 per square foot, up to 500 square feet for a garden. That'll certainly pay for seeds and fertilizer!
