    Default Which guns?

I'm moving up to Alaska in a few months and need to thin out my gun safe by a couple. Any thought on what I should bring?
    I have..
    REM 721 IN. 223Rem
    M-77 MKII.22-250
    REM 700 adl 30.06
    REM 700 bdl .270
    REM 700 cdl 7mm rm (long-range gun)
    M-77 .300 wm
    CZ 550 .375 H&H
    And a ton of shotguns
What rifles would you bring & why?

I could find something to hunt with every gun you listed.... So I would probably figure out how to get em all up but that is just me...

Playing along with this though... The 22-250 would be first off the list for me since the .223 is cheaper and easier on fur. Probably drop the 270 and 300 as well if I had to.

    30-06 for every day hunting
    375 for brown bear
    .223 for fur
7mm assuming that you enjoy long range shooting/hunting
Keep a good 12 gauge, preferably one with both a 28" and 18" barrel.

There may well be things about the rifles that would change my mind. For instance a custom stainless 270 light weight bdl would be handy for mountain hunting. I am assuming that all of the ones listed are wood/blued.

I must admit I'm not a huge. 270 fan, but that gun is coming with. It was my late fathers.

I would say that Lujon is pretty spot on with his analysis. To me there is no use for a 22-250 up here. Down in the lower 48 nobody really cares about damaging coyotes but up here the furs are so nice that you should try to salvage them as much as possible.

Ditch the 22-250 and the .270 but I would still bring the 300, although I do have a 300 and a 7mm and there is nothing that I've shot with the 300 that I couldn't have killed with the 7mm. In fact, I shot my last 2 moose with my 7mm.

    Bring the -
    223
    30-06
    7mm
    375
    one small shotgun for ptarmigan
one large shotgun for everything else.

Just my opinion, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to get them all up here.

Ditto. You have a real good selection right there.

I see some nice stuff...I'd just pack it all.

Tons of shotguns is what I'd dump but I'm not much of a shotgunner.

Pressed to pick one- I'd have to bring the 300WM> you can reasonably do 99% of your hunting here with that.

I like the advice of bringing them all... but that would also depend upon what part of the state that you are moving.

For example: If I were moving to a wet spot such as Ketchikan... I might try to leave most of the collection (blued rifles) in the lower 48.

From a member who moved a few years back, you may not want to thin out yet. Every hunter or gun owner only wants one thing "another gun". Another great thing about AK is everyone has one for sale. My collection is well past what I thinned. If you have family that is staying there that you trust have them store for you. You can bring them with you when you make your winter visiting trip or sell once you know, or experience Alaska. Everyone has their one gun comb, LG caliber, SM caliber and shotgun that they feel is the best to have up here. After that ask what else you own and almost everyone's list gets long.

Oh I'm not coming for a visit! You guys are going to be stuck with us until I'm sick of catching salmon and am physically unable to hunt sheep!

You might want to bring them all up THEN sell what you don't want. You can probably get more for them up here.......(so many people up here seem to think their sh*t is made-o-gold)....lol
Sheep hunting...... the pain goes away, but the stupidity remains...!!!

If you have some classic shotguns bring them as they are hard to find here.

I'd go a bit further and say you have to "add" some guns. Quit being so darn un-american and add a lever rifle (or two) to your collection.....sheesh!

If your looking at 3, I would pick the .270, 7mm & .300 wm for bear. So many guns and so little time!
