    Default Kodiak Ptarmigan or Grouse?

Me and another forum member are heading down to Kodiak this weekend for the next couple of weeks to fill his Goat and Bear tag, as well as a few deer tags...hopefully. I was wondering how the bird hunting is down there, specifically the Ptarmigan or Grouse (if they even inhabit the island). Is it worth taking the 12 gauge along?

    Thanks,
    Tom

No grouse, but ptarmigan can be good at times especially on the south end of the island.

I've not been there personally but I've read magazine articles about folks flying bird dogs in specifically to target ptarmigan. They are certainly on the island. Give Rick Merizon with ADFG a call and see what he has to say. Haha. Might be worth contacting a Kodiak bio to rub elbows.

Are you going to get a chance to look for ducks while you're there?

No grouse, but plenty of ptarmigan.

I saw plenty of ptarmigan, ducks and geese in the area where I hunted last year. It made me wish I had brought along the shotgun to pass the time!

Not sure about going after ducks. We had to cancel our zodiak, if we get a goat/bear/deer fast enough we can go back into town and try to get out after a few sea ducks. It all depends on how fast we fill the big game tags.
