Default Is there an easy way to tell if it's gold or not?

I was on a moose hunting float trip a couple of weeks ago. The one time the sun did decide to shine, I saw what looked like gold dust in the sand at the edge of the river. As soon as the sun disappeared, you couldn't see any gold in the sand. It was cloudy and rained about 99% of the time we were on the river for 9 days. The only time I saw this was when the sun was out.

I looked a little farther down in the forum and found the answer to my question. Looks like it was pyrite...

Most likely what you saw was Mica as it is shiney in the sun but not in the shade.
Next time consider buying one of the newer style green gold pans and taking it with you. That and a garden trowel will allow you to check those areas for gold when you find them. Gold panning really is easy to learn.
You never know as they say "Gold is where you find it".

Take a pocket knife and press down on a large flake. If it bends, probably gold. If it breaks or shatters..... it is leaverite.
