After over a year of scouting, practicing with calls, studying the birds, burning countless gallons of fuel, thousands invested in equipment, today was the culmination of all the above efforts for my first hunt where I specifically targeted the Lesser Canadian Goose.... Turns out they wanted into the hole we were going to set up in so bad that we didn't even get a chance to set the decoys out. When we did get the decoys out... the ducks wouldn't stay out of them! I was wishing I brought my field decoys for the ducks. The geese were flying in huge flocks so after we lit into the first flock we left them alone after that as we had dropped 7 birds and didn't want to further educate a flock of 50 for one more goose. The ducks however were coming in groups of 10 or less so it was game on there. The weather was terrible, raining, blowing 60+ MPH and a lot rougher water than I ever want to have my 16' duck boat in ever again (Waves over the bow on every wave). I froze my butt off and was soaked to the bone.
We ended the day with 7 geese, and 10 ducks of various sorts before we gave in to the weather. Next time I go I will know exactly what equipment to bring!
