Thread: Calling Deer on POW

    Default Calling Deer on POW

I've read that lots of guys call deer successfully (particularly during the rut) on POW. I'm curious - is this mostly fawn distress calls, doe estrus calls, or both? Thanks for any advice.

I tried to use a fawn distress call many years ago hunting bears on POW. A few minutes/seconds after blowing the call several does would run right up within a few yards. My daughter and I would try to shoo them away but they came right back every time we blew the call. Kind of fun. No bucks ran up but it worked for does.

I harvested several deer [doe and buck] out on Kodiak using a Circe Jackrabbit Call.
We've had differing reactions from just about getting run over to coaxing out of the brush and into a glade.
Looks like they've gone to a variable tone model now.

Words of caution: we did have a bear respond!
