Thread: When Do Bears Rub Out?

Default When Do Bears Rub Out?

I was wondering... when do the hides of bears usually rub out? Is it dependent on weather? I'm sure it is later in the year as you head north... Anyone know of specific time frimes... or does it just depend on the bear?

Up in Fairbanks the hides start to get iffy around the middle of june. I stop actually trying to shoot a bear about june 20, but it does depend on the individual bear and the weather.

Seen one taken on 4th of July weekend, PRIME HIDE

Seen a number of them rubbed real bad, right out of the den. Need to look em over pretty good before you shoot. Not many want a hide looking like a buffalo rug.

And if you do shoot one that is rubbed, just pray for a nice even rub on the whole bear.

Shot my bear last year on fathers day in 20E...perfect hide! shot another 3 hours later, a little rubbed behind both back shoulders. Every bears different regardless of where your at, gotta look at them over good. I saw black bears up north off the Dalton Hwy Labor day weekend, and their hides look good too.....K

I've seen blackies in 16B with perfect hides in early july.
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.

    Default prime hides,,,

I bow killed an Elliot Hwy bear on June 26th, 2006 that had a perfect hide.

It just depends on the bear.

    Default Weird....

I would have thought June would be a terrible month for taking hides. I took a blackie the last week in July with a beautiful summer coat... I thought even that would be a gamble. So it must depend just on the particular bear for the most part... what do you guys think?
