Default ruger m77 mk II deffective safety problem

7mm Mag left hand. Rifle will fire when in the load/unload safe mode. Also, if trigger is pulled when in the safe position, the gun will fire when the safety is taken off. Does the safety block the bolt as in the pre 64m70 Win. and the mauser 98 or does it just block the trigger. Has anyone else had this problem.

Sounds like someone has been into the trigger. The safety serves two functions. When it rotates in the receiver, a lug at the bottom of the safety shaft swings into place to block the movement of the trigger. It is likely that it is not preventing all movement in the trigger. Hence it firing when on half safe. The second function is the safety lever itself, when in the full safe position, engages a cut in the striker, preventing forward movement of the striker, and also pressing forward a small plunger to engage the bolt body and prevent the handle from being lifted. I have seen these broken or sheared off by overzealous users. A model 70 safety is not the same, it just looks kinda similar, but operates completely differently.

Thank You for the information. Figured out how the trigger block in the load/unload mode works when disassembled and you were right on. Chem dye everywhere and some ham handed jerk who obviously fancied himself a gunsmith had been at work with a dremel on both the trigger and the sear. Parts are junk and either back to Ruger or might go with Timney. Thanks again, Wayne
