    Default Valdez White Meat!

Managed a 2nd run to Valdez looking for some white meat fish. While the weather greatly limited the fishing time we managed to pick up a few. Some nice whale viewing and a little stream fishing as a bonus. Stopped at Chitina on the way home and picked up 145 Reds between 4 of us in 6 hours. Made a good dent in filling the fish portion of the freezers.

how are those dolly's to eat? I've never tried one as I've heard they are real bony and kind of tough to cook right. We catch quite a few king fishing in the spring and we always throw em back. Is there a trick to cooking them?

My bet is those dollies fillet, cook, can, and taste just like Reds. Bet they even fought like reds. My experience with dollies is that the saltwater caught dollies are great tablefare while river/lake caught dollies will range from ok to not so good/muddy. Probly depends on their diet and other factors.

    Nice bunch of fish.
How far out of Whittier did you have to go for Halibut or Lings? We are heading there for the first time this weekend. Looking at charts, the mouth of Sawmill Bay looks like a decent spot. Would you be willing to point out any others?

You'll have to go out farther than we did. Didn't catch a thing...

Maybe because we weren't using the right kind of boat:

We started fishing 70 miles out of Valdez and worked our way back - The closer we got to Valdez the less fish we caught. It is unfortunate but that seems to be the normal for us anymore. We used to pick up a few halibut closer to Valdez but they are few and far between lately. We were hoping for a few silvers when we got closer but they weren't around yet either.

Thanks for the heads up. Much appreciated. I will start poring over the charts for that far out then. :-)
