The Seward Highway is closed near Turnagain Pass after a man kidnapped another man in Anchorage at gunpoint and drove the victim in his car south on the highway Friday afternoon, according to the Alaska State Troopers.

The highway was still closed from Mile 69.5 to Mile 73 as of 2 p.m., said Anchorage police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.

It started in South Anchorage, where the suspect was "rummaging" through things in the victim's grandmother's backyard, Parker said.

"The guy confronts him, he pulls out a gun and says, 'Get in the car,' and takes off down the highway," Parker said.

The suspect stopped in Turnagain Pass to use a restroom, taking the car key and the gun with him and leaving the victim in the car, Parker said.

"But he didn't know the owner had a spare key," Parker said.

The victim drove off and called police, Parker said.

"That's why they closed down the highway. There's a guy out there with a gun."

Troopers described the suspect as a roughly 40-year-old white man with a shaved head standing about 6 feet tall. He has a black and red tattoo on his left shoulder and was last seen wearing a black tank top, black pants and was carrying a blue and white windbreaker, troopers said.

Motorists in the area describe major traffic backups in both directions north and south of Turnagain Pass.

Darn, I feared that would happen, It would be nice if the Hwy. was closed on weekends.

Got stuck in this and it took 5 hours to drive from Kenai to Anchorage with the delays...some of the faces of the tour bus drivers heading out of anchorage and stuck in motionless traffic were priceless! haha glad the guy got away, hopefully the carjacker makes it into the food chain it would be Alaska justice for sure...
