    Exclamation Herring shortage?

I talked with John Weedman with Western Auto Marine Thursday 04/12/07. He said the Herring will be in short supply this year. His regular supplier is only going to be delivering 1/3 his regular allotment / order. He has been trying to contact other sources with no success. They are limiting the number you may purchase at a time. Just a heads up for the local fishermen.

Sport caught fish isn't allowed for bait. Does this include hooligan?

Nope... there are stated exceptions for "bait" fish.

Quoted from ADF&G 2007 SE Alaska Sport Fish Regulations Summary Booklet: "(b) Whitefish, herring, and species for which bag limits, seasons, or other regulatory methods and means are not provided in sport fishing regulations, as well as the head, tail, fins, and viscera of legally taken sport fish, may be used as bait."

Furthermore, "personal use" fish fall under different regulations than "sport" fish. Only a fool would do so, but you could legally use dipnetted sockeye from the Kenai or Copper Rivers for bait, fillets and all. I had a trooper explain the regulation to me, as I asked about using the bellies for halibut bait. Turns out you can use the whole thing.

True. Where I get caught up is that there is no "personal use" fishery for non-residents, so the majority of my charter clients are "sport fishing" no matter what we catch.

Last year, we had about a 12-14" herring hit a hoochie while trolling for silvers. I left it there for a few minutes as "live bait" and picked up an 18 lb. coho as expected. I actually had a trooper try to write me a ticket for using "sport caught" herring for bait, until I asked him what the bag limit was for sport caught herring... when he couldn't tell me, I showed him the paragraph that I quoted above and he was quite content...
